In November when we got to check out the all new design of Artegon Marketplace Orlando. We got to meet Kathryn, owner of SOS Art Gallery inside Artegon Marketplace. After numerous photos of the store front posted to our social media, we took our next step to get in contact with Kathryn for a face to face interview, after speaking with Kathryn its clear to see her passion for what she does and just how embedded into social media she is.
After nearly a decade working in the design & technical services industries, Kathryn chose to transition out of her corporate career in order to permanently develop as a full-time entrepreneur.
“My passions in the creative arts led me to take classes at a local art school, Kathryn said it then provided the encouragement I needed to continue the journey towards becoming a commercial artist. My degree from University of Florida was in Editing Journalism, heavy in photography, design & editing, so my heart’s always been in creative services, with that idea in mind, I developed BizOrlando.com in 2012, which in itself the SOS brand has transformed through its own branding changes until becoming Studio Orlando Services (SOS). In 2015, BizOrlando.com (then SmallBizOrlando.com) was chosen as one of the top 10 Florida blogs by the FL Blog Con Social Media & Bloggers Conference Forum 2015 polls, in which fans voted for their favorites among 10 different categories. SmallBizOrlando.com was rated #1 in the category of Biz / Money / Marketing / Tech”.
In March 2013, Kathryn applied to become a RAW Orlando Emerging Artist in the field of photography, and after being chosen to debut in the May 2013 showcase, she soon began showcasing in 100+ gallery showings & art stroll events throughout Central Florida, Kathryn’s Orlando cityscapes photography is featured in many local Central Florida businesses.
In the summer of 2014, Artegon Marketplace approached Kathryn to open a retail storefront for her art business, after evaluating the pros and cons for several months, decided that she was ready to take the plunge in developing her first storefront. On November 20, 2014, SOS Art Gallery became one of the first founding tenants of Artegon Marketplace, dedicated to providing a retail marketplace for local artists.
“I made the decision that a permanent artist studio made more sense in building both consistency for my brand as well as a storefront location for residents & tourists to purchase my gifts & artwork. Kathryn said As a local artist, the marketing & advertising support of Artegon Marketplace has provided my business with the opportunity of reaching & building a business on a higher global level”.
Since April 29, 2015, $1.00 of each bookmark sold has been donated to the Pi Beta Phi Foundation Emma Harper Turner Fund which provides financial assistance to sorority sisters in need of help who are experiencing medical, financial &/or personal hardships.
Since the redesign of SOS Art Gallery occurred in October 2015 just before the one-year anniversary of Artegon Marketplace, SOS has maintained steady growth. Once the holiday shopping season began, other local artisans who are involved in paper crafting as either a hobby or as a business soon showed interest in becoming part of SOS Art Gallery to sell their work. As a result, SOS Art Gallery now features more than 10 local artisans & counting.
“It means so much to me as a business owner to have grown up in a creative family, with which I built the business concepts, & to now be able to have built an infrastructure to have other local artisans & crafters be able to showcase their work. Kathryn said I’ve enjoyed working with my friends, family & customers to build SOS Art Gallery into a successful business”
By being a retail storefront in an indoor marketplace of more than 700,000 square feet, Artegon Marketplace provides SOS a retail location with consistent operating hours, in doors out of the elements, especially in Florida’s crazy weather. A cover for the rainy days and a cool place to be during those hot summer days.
SOS Art Gallery has become an in-store handmade cards & gift shop where customers may find an assortment of papercrafted collections for all-occasions & holidays for unique & one-of-a-kind gifts made by hand, Kathryn is also able to simultaneously manage several online retail shops such as Ebay, Fine Art America & other direct sales businesses such as Stampin’ Up! Arts & Crafts line which has become the foundation of her business & the inventory created to sell in-store.
